CoVantage Cares Update

Giving Tuesday Matching Gift Campaign

Wonderful News: Fortune Lake was selected as the Crystal Falls recipient for the 2022 CoVantage Cares Foundation Inc, Giving Tuesday Campaign! We had two weeks to fundraise, and the incredible Fortune Lake community showed up in BIG ways!

Together our camp community raised $141,409.89 and the CoVantage Cares matched $77,107 for a TOTAL of $218,517.40! The money will be used to update our highest use buildings – duplexes, Emanuel Lodge, and the Dining Hall – making them more energy efficient and accessible and ensuring they’ll be usable for many years into the future.

We blew our goal of $160,000 out of the water! We are grateful to the God of abundance who has blessed this effort and to all of you who participated! THANK YOU to our donors, our Regional Event Coordinators, campers and staff alumni, supporting businesses, and our Association congregations!

Updated COVID-19 Policies

We are busy preparing for a fantastic summer at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp, including staying on top of the latest developments with regards to COVID-19. Our COVID-19 Task Force recently reconvened to update our policies based on what we know about the new variants and how they’re spreading. See our updated documents below for full details.

2022 COVID-19 Policies & Procedures for Summer Camp

2022 FAQs about COVID-19 Policies

Here are the significant changes:

  • All campers and guests are encouraged to be vaccinated against COVID-19, and those who are eligible for a booster are encouraged to get one.
  • Those who are not fully vaccinated will still be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72-hours of arrival at camp. In addition to the PCR test, NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests) will now also be acceptable. NAAT may be preferred, as they can be read much more quickly (within a few hours) and are accessible at all Walgreen’s locations.
    • If you would like additional information on how to access either of these tests, please let us know.
  • Those who are fully vaccinated will now also be required to show proof of a negative test done within 24-hours of arrival at camp. All at-home rapid tests will be considered acceptable.
    • We will have a limited supply of BinaxNOW rapid tests onsite that can be made available in the rare instance that someone is not able to access an at-home test. Please call the office to schedule an appointment and plan to arrive 30-minutes before your scheduled check-in time to be tested here.
  • Those who have recovered from COVID-19 within 10-90 days of their arrival at camp may provide a certificate of recovery from their medical professional, and their testing requirement will be waived.
  • We will be leaning on the CDC COVID-19 County Tracker as an additional tool to determine risk from the home regions of our campers. This will help us determine our masking protocol:
    • If all campers are coming from green (low risk) regions, masks will not be required for mixed groups indoors.
    • If some campers are coming from yellow (medium risk) or red (high risk) regions, masks will be required for mixed groups indoors.
  • To combat the Omicron and other highly contagious variants, KN95 masks are preferred, but disposable surgical masks will be acceptable. Please plan to send masks with your campers so we can be prepared to shift into wearing them if/when needed.

Volunteers Wanted

We are seeking volunteers to help us prepare our facilities for the quickly approaching summer! All people, skills sets, and abilities are welcome. We need our outdoor

spaces raked, buildings deep cleaned, and wood moved and split.

We are not scheduling a formal work day; rather we are asking you to come at the time that works best for you! Call or email our office at 906-214-2267 or officemanager@fortunelake.org. Let us know when you’d like to come, what you’d like to do (we can suggest some things if you’re not sure), and how many people you’ll be bringing. We’d be happy to provide any necessary tools and a meal too.

Many hands make light work!

Intergenerational Camps Speakers

We are so excited to introduce our Intergenerational Camp resource people for Summer 2022!

June 19-24

Intergenerational Full-Week & Half-Week

Speaker: Anna M. Madsen

Anna M. Madsen, Lutheran pastor and public theologian, is host of the Spent Dandelion Theological Retreat Center, situated along the North Shore in Two Harbors, Minnesota, and the creator of OMG: Center for Theological Conversation, through which she writes, blogs, consults, and presents. Her work can be found regularly in Gather Magazine and the Living Lutheran.

Her most recent book I Can Do No Other: The Church’s New Here We Stand Moment addresses the call to speak not just to justification but to justice, and her forthcoming book Joyful Defiance: Death Does Not Win The Day, also through Fortress Press, seeks to ground the experience of joy within the experience of lament, leading to a life which echoes the holy truth of Holy Saturday.

July 24-29

Intergenerational Full-Week

Speakers: Pr. Tim and Pr. Mary Canniff-Kuhn

Tim and Mary were on staff at Fortune Lake for 6 years as counselors, summer program directors and craft director. They later went on to serve another LOM site as Program Directors at Lutheridge Camp for 25 years.

Mary’s passions combine art and spirituality. Sports and music occupy much of Tim’s time.

They have 3 married sons (who all met their spouses at camp) and 4 grandchildren.

2022 Annual Meeting

Our Annual Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp Association Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, April 24 at 3pm CENTRAL in the chapel at Fortune Lake. Find out about what happened at camp last year and what we are looking forward to in the year to come!

Per our bylaws, each congregation is encouraged to have up to three voting members (no more than two lay people, with the third vote coming from the congregation’s pastor).

Due to caution around COVID-19, no meal will be served this year.

Annual meeting packets have been mailed and emailed to congregations and can also be found here: Annual Meeting Packet

Wanted: Summer Staff 2022

Summer Staff 2022 Applications are now LIVE! We’re seeking enthusiastic, creative young leaders who are looking for the experience of a lifetime!
