Interim Director appointed!

NEWS from the FLLC Board:

“We have hired an interim director.  Sara Jonasen from Oconomowoc, WI, will be starting on February 22.  She comes to FLLC with 3 years experience as a Program Director for Crossways Pine Lake Camp, 8 years experience as Site Director for Crossways Waypost Camp, both in Wisconsin, and 1 year experience as Food Service & Housekeeping Director at EWALU in Iowa.  She is young, enthusiastic, and will hopefully be a good fit for FLLC.  She is ready to jump in and get started.  She will be working part-time for recruiting summer staff, and will be starting full time in mid April.

We have a current contract to get us through the summer camping months.  It is renewable at that time.  We will see where we are in our permanent director replacement process.  She has had interim director training through Outdoor Lutheran Ministries, and will also offer assistance getting us through the process of obtaining a permanent replacement.”

Update from the Board of Directors

January 9, 2018

Dear ELCA Northern Great Lakes Synod/FLLC Association Member Congregations, Friends and Supporters of Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp:

It is with great sadness and sincere gratitude that the Board of Directors announces the resignation of Pastor Tracy Polzin as Camp Director, effective February 3, 2018. Pastor Tracy has been an integral part of a Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp revival. She arrived at camp 6 years ago amidst some pretty tough times. Her position required her to do the work that had formerly been done by two people. Pastor Tracy not only “arrived” at camp, but got to work and shone.

Under her directorship, Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp has become a place whose future is very bright. Pastor Tracy’s ideas and implementation of these ideas have played a key part in Camp getting to where it is today. The summer of 2016 saw the largest attendance that Camp has seen in recent times. During a time when most congregations’ Sunday School attendance is at an all-time low, this is no small feat! Fortune Lake is growing and thriving.

Pastor Tracy was also instrumental in two large Anniversary Celebrations that lead to great things at Camp. The new pavilion and the tree houses at Camp have both come to fruition under her leadership. Many innovative and new programs, including Rocket Camp and Night Owls, have been executed under her leadership. Additionally, there have been multiple young people who have sensed God’s call into ministry while working with Pastor Tracy.

Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp will be searching for a new Camp Director in the next few months. During this transition period, our top priority will be to find a new Camp Director that will keep the fires of Fortune Lake burning, and to keep Camp running as the stable and effective organization it has become.

We are so grateful for Pastor Tracy’s passion, dedication and enthusiasm for Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp. The Board, Staff, Campers and their families will all miss her and her family. We wish her nothing but success as she follows her calling into a different ministry. Join us as we ask the Lord to bless and keep her, shine countenance upon her, and grant her peace.

President, Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp Board of Directors

January 8, 2018

Dear Members of the board of directors,

Fortune Lake has been a Place of Grace for 87 years and I have been privileged to be part of it’s story for the last 6 years. I has been my honor to witness people find faith, be renewed, and discover leadership skills during my time here. I have seen the incredible impact that this place has on current staff and campers, but also to hear how it has been so for generations. It has been a place of grace for my family as we were welcomed into the Fortune Lake Family and our own children discovered the many blessings of living in a camp community

I am thankful for the opportunity to have been called to be the Camp Director at Fortune Lake. As I look into this new year, I am feeling called to a different ministry that will allow us to be closer to our family. I will complete my time at Fortune Lake on February 3.  Thank you to all who help make Fortune Lake the amazing place that it is. I am grateful for all of the support that you have given to me during my time at Fortune Lake.

I am convinced that the future is bright for Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp. It’s rich history will continue to serve it well as Fortune Lake continues to “drive faith forward.” I think the best is yet to come. New generations will learn about faith, the church will gain new leaders because of their time of learning and Fortune Lake and it will be place where people come to to be renewed.

I am happy to help with the transition in any way possible. Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp will always have a special place in my heart and will remain in my prayers.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Tracy Polzin

Effective Camp Research Project

Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp is honored to announce that we have received a grant  from the Effective Camp Research Project/Siebert Foundation. The grant will support a unique research project at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp this summer. The purpose of the research is to demonstrate the impact of a one week camp experience on campers ages 10-17.

The Effective Camp Research Project is the first ever research team to empirically study the impact of religious camps.  In receiving this grant Fortune Lake is on the cutting edge of these new discoveries nationwide.  “Our team has great respect for Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp and their leader, Rev Tracy Polzin.  It will be exciting to measure, empirically, how this organization is making a difference in the lives of their campers,” said researcher Dr. Paul Hill.  “Offering this scholarship to Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp gives our research team more data to not only evaluate FLLC, but to compare their scores with other camps,” added fellow researcher Dr. Jake Sorenson.

The research will be done this summer and evaluated throughout the fall and early winter.  “We already have great stories of campers lives being changed, now we will be able to further understand how that change happens, and how we can improve our ministry,” commented camp director, Tracy Polzin.

The Effective Camp Research Project has been generously funded by the Siebert Foundation in Milwaukee, WI for the past two years.  The results of their work can be found at

Summer 2017 Theme: The Water of Life!

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” -Isaiah 43:2.

Water is the physical life source of our bodies and our world, making up about 60% of adult human beings and 70% of the planet Earth. As campers will discover throughout the week, water is also the source of Christian spiritual life. The Bible is filled with stories involving water as a powerful means by which God sustains, heals, revives, and saves us. God surrounds us and fills us with literal waters and spiritual waters that remind us how we are part of God’s life. Register now for a life changing experience at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp. Campers will grow in faith, make new friends, and have tons of fun!

2016 Recap

As 2016 comes to a close, we here at Fortune Lake are reminiscing on all the wonderful things that have happened this year.

We’ve had a great time hosting year-round retreats, as well as having retreat groups come and enjoy our facilities. Whether it was singing camp songs around the fire, chatting away at meals, playing games in the chapel, or enjoying quiet time in our lodges, we have many fond memories of the various groups and individuals we’ve gotten to meet and fellowship with.

The snow is softly falling outside, and it seems just like yesterday summer was upon us. We had a spectacular summer this year, and loved having this Place of Grace be filled with so much people. We had an incredible amount of campers come to Fortune Lake and we had a lot of Day Camps too.

September came too quick, and before we knew it, we were hosting year-round retreats again, along with introducing a new program called Half Day Camp. We have worked it out with Forest Park School to send their elementary students here whenever there is a half day. These kids get the chance to experience camp and it’s a wonderful afternoon filled with fun and laughter.

Our Fall Fest was a success and we are so thankful for all the support and love we’ve received on our annual fundraiser.

The holidays are upon us and it’s crazy to think that in a few days we’ll be transitioning into a new year.

We’re thankful to everyone who has prayed, helped financially, and supported us in various capacities. It takes a community to help change the life of a child, and we’re thankful for our Fortune Lake community.

Blessings to you all and we’re excited to see what 2017 has in store for us!

Summer 2016: The Jesus Way

This summer’s theme The Jesus Way focused each day’s Bible study on these topics: praying, loving our neighbors, forgiveness, feeding, & serving the Jesus Way. Each day campers studied a story about Jesus that helped us learn more about how we can live our lives in the love of Christ.

We had a great summer! 600 on-site campers came to Fortune Lake this summer! We haven’t seen this many campers in a decade. We are so thankful to God for the families, churches, & donors who make camp, & this life-changing experience, possible for so many!

Our campers were represented by families & individuals from near & far. We had campers from Alaska, Texas, Hawaii as well as many from Wisconsin and Michigan and several other states. Our youngest camper was just a few months old and we had some in their 80s! Those lucky Vagabonds & Night Owls were able to use our NEW Tree Houses for the first time!

Returning & new counseling staff & support staff, from very near & VERY far, join our full-time staff to keep Fortune Lake running smoothly every summer! We are thankful for volunteers also who help us during these busy summer weeks!

Received Grant Award for New Boating Vests!

Fortune Lake received a grant award from the Dickinson Area Community Foundation. We’re thankful for this foundation, and the opportunity to improve the quality and safety of our waterfront. We’ll be using these funds to buy new boating vests for our campers! We’re excited to see our waterfront be graced with new boating vests this summer!
