The Ageless Story of Jesus
A year and a half ago Pr. Sharolyn Swenson came to the Northern Great Lakes Synod, as our Assistant to the Bishop and Director of Evangelical Mission. Originally hailing from Texas, the U. P. was a big change. Sharolyn quickly began looking for places to call home in this new, unfamiliar territory.
Sharolyn recalls her first time at Fortune Lake. Amanda had extended an invitation to “come and see”. She describes a “messy hospitality” where ministry was ongoing and projects abound, much like visiting an old friend who didn’t manage to tidy up the place before a guest’s arrival. From that first visit, Sharolyn was smitten. Here was a place where the story of Jeus takes center stage, often in new and exciting ways.
Pr. Sharolyn recently joined the Evergreen campers (ages 55+) for their third annual program. As she gathered with them every morning to lead scripture study and reflection, she added another layer of fun, creative, heartfelt layer to the Jesus story, a story that has been shared in this place for 96 years. She states that through the interactions in the camp community, she can’t tell whether she’s giving or receiving; relationships are reciprocal.
Sharolyn proudly boasts that in her travels throughout the Northwoods, Fortune Lake is one of the few places that she doesn’t need a GPS to visit. Like her home and her office, camp has become a regular stop in her routine, a place to be rejuvenated, live in community with others, and revel in the magic of the story of Jesus of Nazareth, a story that never gets old. We are so grateful to Pr. Sharolyn and the many pastors, campers, and volunteers who joined us this summer!
